Painfully shy Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke) has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His roommate, Neil, although exceedingly bright and popular, is very much under the thumb of his overbearing father. The two, along with their other friends, meet Professor Keating (Robin Williams), their new English teacher, who tells them about the Dead Poets Society, and encourages them to go against the status quo. Each does this in his own way, and is changed for life.
Three reasons why Tufts Film Series wants you to see this film:
1. The movie’s line, “Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary,” was voted one of the one hundred best movie quotes of all time.
2. The students get to rip pages out of a textbook – who hasn’t wanted to do that?
3. This was one of Robert Sean Leonard’s (Dr. Wilson from the TV series House) first movies.
