Advertising

Want to get your message out to around 800 people a weekend? Looking for a cheaper way to advertise to lots of people at one time? Look no farther than Film Series. Film Series currently offers advertising in two forms: Pre-show entertainment and co-sponsorship .

Cosponsorship
Groups wishing to show a movie on campus related to their interests are invited to cosponsor a movie with Film Series. Any movie that a group wishes to show, Film Series can work into our schedule. Some of the advantages of cosponsoring a movie with Film Series include: reaching a broad audience of Tufts students and increasing your club’s visibility on campus. In addition, cosponsoring a movie with Film Series is the only legal option for showing a movie on campus. The fines of showing a non-licensed movie to a public audience can range up to $250,000. By cosponsoring a movie with Film Series, your club can rest assured that the FBI will not investigate your organization for copyright infringement.

To request a co-sponsorship and get a price quote, email Natalie Wiegand, Advertising Director

Preshow Advertising
Slide Format All advertisements must be in powerpoint form (*. ppt ). They can be whatever you want but must be static (i.e. containing no moving elements). They can be a maximum of two slides in length. Slides must also contain no sound elements. Use whatever graphics and color schemes you want, although note that these slides will be projected on a wall projector; some colors will not be as rich as others. Showtime All advertisements will be played before the movie and will appear at least twice before the movie starts. They will be intermixed with other pre-show entertainment including but not limited to Tufts Trivia, movie schedules, and theater reminders.

Contact Natalie Wiegand with questions and/or requests about pre-show advertising.

TFS Payment Schedule

The deadline for slide submission is 5pm on the Wednesday before the weekend the slide is to run. Requests received after the deadline are not guaranteed to be shown, and will incur a late fee of $10 if they can be processed in time for showing. Slide submissions should be made to Edward Weiyi Zheng after co-sponsorship has been approved by the Advertising Director. For Tufts Student Organization, payment can be made with a Inter-TCU Transfer form. Forms can be found outside of the Senate office and completed forms can be left in the holding bin next to the Treasury office door. Payment must be received by the first Tuesday after first weekend your slide has been shown. If payment is not received by that day, a late fee will be added to your bill.

For a Tufts Department payment can be made by means of an Expense Transfer Form. Outside businesses may pay by cash, check or money order. For more information about payment contact The Billing Department . It is the submitting group’s responsibility to understand these policies before submitting an ad for display.

Cancellations and Refunds
Film Series will provide a full refund for cancellations received prior to the slide submission deadline. Refunds for slides withdrawn after the slide submission deadline will be based on whether or not the slide has been shown. If the slide has not been shown, a full refund will be provided. Otherwise, a partial refund will be provided based on the number of times the slide has been shown.

Film Series assumes no financial responsibility for typographical errors made in advertisements, but Film Series will correct any substantive errors made by Film Series and reshow such advertisements. Corrections must be received by the slide deadline for the following weekend.

In the event that a slide cannot be shown for technical reasons, the text of the slide will be read to the audience. Fees for the display of the slide will not be refunded under these circumstances.

Reserve
If you want to submit an advertisement, email The Advertising Office. You can submit the powerpoint slide directly through email or on a CD ONLY. Slides will NOT be accepted at a movie showing for inclusion and arrangements for showing must be made prior to the weekend. About Us

Film Series is part of the umbrella organization: Programming Board.

P-Board oversees much of the social programming at Tufts.

The Office of Campus Life is always looking for ways for students to have good, clean fun. So, Tufts Film Series shows 35mm big screen movies (with full distribution rights) over the weekend (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights) as a way to bring Tufts students together in a relaxed environment. Most of all, it is free to all members of the Tufts community.

Tufts Film Series was founded in 1982 with some second-hand 16mm projection equipment. Originally Film Series showed movies in MacPhee Pub and Barnum 008 in addition to several outside shows. At first Film Series was to have started with 35mm projection equipment but the funds for such equipment was not available to the club.

In the middle 90’s, the club was showing three movies a weekend on Wednesday through Sunday for a total of seven shows a week. The price for admission then was $2.00.

Over the years the 16mm projectors began to break down more and more and attendance was dropping at shows. By 2001 the 16mm equipment broke just about every weekend and parts for the machines were harder and harder to find.

Over the Summer of 2001, however, a water main on the forth floor of Barnum Hall burst flooding Barnum 008, forcing the University to renovate the room. After ten years of lobbying to the school, the administration agreed to pay for the cost of new 35mm Projection and sound equipment. A new larger booth with two Orcon lamps and a new Dolby Sound Processor relieved the club of having to use the old 16mm projectors and greatly increased the qualities of the movies.

Even with the new equipment, though, things still went wrong. The “new” projectors were actually refurbished from old components and the machines were also installed incorrectly, causing a few headaches. With all the mechanical failures, attendance to shows continued to drop. In the spring of 2002, the club decided to stop charging admission to the movies.

The 2002-2003 school year brought increased attendance to shows, but Film Series remained relatively unknown.

The 2003-2004 school year has had a sharp increase in attendance with many shows leaving standing room only. With a lower occurrence of mechanical failures, Film Series has become a more popular alternative for weekend activities.

In the Spring of 2004, Film Series, with the help of the Office of Equal Opportunities, hopes to install closed-captioning for selected movies and at the same time upgrade our sound equipment to include DTS digital discrete surround sound.

The 2004-2005 school year has retained its large audiences while offering refreshments and poster giveaways at special showings.

In the beginning of 2008, new sound problems have plagued one of the projectors, which have been a disappointment to both the audience and the members. As membership within the club continues to dwindle, attendance to Film Series shows are steady, although refreshments are no longer served. By fall, a new image, a new website and more advertising, attendance, student involvement is on the rise and increased cosponsoship creates fantastic exposure.

With some fresh ideas to entice membership and bring value to existing members. We hosted our first ever “Night At the Oscars” and Movie on the Rez Quad on a 2-story outdoor screen, and students voted from a list for their movie of choice. We also hope to host these events every semester.
